Do they even have that any more? Library paste? Or is it all barcodes and scanners these days? Sigh...
Well anyway, just so you know, rice cereal tastes (and looks) like library paste. It is gross. Trust me, I tasted it. So has the Critter, and she thinks so too.
I've mixed it with breastmilk, with formula, thick, thin, every which way. It does not matter, it is all library paste. Blech.
We began giving the Critter Girl library paste, err, I mean rice cereal last week. She thought it was very strange, this whole spoon-fed thing. But she was interested. After the novelty has worn off though, she is clearly not happy with eating library paste. She opens her mouth wide for the first bite, then gets a taste of that nasty stuff, and spits it out and cries. Poor girl, with such a mean mommy that feeds her library paste.
So we made the switch this week to oatmeal cereal. Which I discovered is not real oatmeal, but a special cereal made for babies. Which closely resembles library paste. Let's call it oatmeal-scented library paste.
It goes over a little bit better, but she is still not thrilled. So I have to ask, what is the deal with this whole baby cereal thing? Do other babies actually like this stuff? Do they eat it willingly? Is my Critter Girl just finicky? Not ready to eat solids? Or does she have her mother's sensitive palate and thinks this stuff is gross (because it is!!)?
I think I might just make her some sweet potatoes. Stuff that tastes good, and is real food that real people eat, and see if she'll eat that.
Because library paste is gross.

Yep. Totally the experience we had with our son. Coupled with his lack of enthusiasm for library paste was a burning desire to feed himself. We switched over to foods we were eating pretty quickly, and it worked great. If Critter is excited about being fed by you but not the food, just puree some of the veggies you're making yourselves for dinner and feed her that. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteBaby cereal is disgusting. The only way Henry will eat any of them (and oatmeal is far & away his favorite) is to make it with water and salted butter. I'm convinced that baby-food makers are out to make picky eaters out of our kids for their own profit -- I mean, the kid will eat ANYTHING I make (and I'm stingy with salt because I don't much like it), and almost nothing for 'kids his age'--I swear because it's SO BLAND. Blech.
ReplyDeleteSeriously - try seasoning it a bit. I KNOW we're not supposed to add salt to babies' food, but I'm not talking potato-chip level of saltiness, just a hint of something a human being would be interested in consuming...
Let us know if dressing it up works for Critter! We're getting ready to start cereal soon, too, so this is great advice!
ReplyDeleteToo funny! And gross! Why would anyone think babies would like that stuff? Weird. I find it amazing how there is this whole market out there for baby-specific things. Why can't they just eat baby-fied versions of what adults eat? I was just looking up "solids" in the LLL book last night. They recommend bananas, avocado, mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes with breast milk, and a few other things. All of those sound much better than library paste... Please let us know how this all goes. I'll be introducing Mads to the world of solids in a couple of months so I'm keen to learn from your experiences!
ReplyDeleteWe decided to skip cereals and purees all together and have gone straight to solids. It's called Baby Lead Weaning and the kiddo loooves it. :)
ReplyDeleteI did not even try rice cereal, I hate rice cereal to begin with, and I stick to the motto 'Don't give to the baby what you wouldn't eat'.
ReplyDeleteIn Germany there is something called Grieß, which is also popular in my country, and I used to love, love, love it as a child. And this is what George eats with mucho gusto as well. It is something like ground wheat, semolina I think, closest thing in US could be Cream of Wheat.
But otherwise I started George on fruit (bananas, pears) and veg (sweet potatoes, avocado, carrots) and I was surprised to find out that he most likes green veg after all (broccoli and green asparagus). And apricots.
You'll find out what she likes. From now on, things are going to get more interesting every day. ;-)
Very interesting. Sorry that the Critter doesn't like it, but I'm sure she'll start loving real food soon!
