The Critter Girl continues to sleep through the night. Hallelujah!! And let me be clear, she is sleeping anywhere from 8 to 11 hours at a time. So she still might be up at 5am, but I am not at all complaining. And she will always go back down after a diaper change and short feed til 7:30-8am, so it works. It works real well. Don't I sound rested? :)
Buuuut...that is not the only sleep the Critter Girl should be getting. She should be napping too. And ummm...well that has gone all to hell.
She was a good napper before the nighttime breakthrough. Two solid naps a day, for 1.5-2.5 hours each. Now, not so much. I mean, I guess she needs less napping time now? I'm not even sure. But now, she is dozing off for naps at the usual times, but then only sleeps for 40 minutes, max.
Is that enough? It doesn't seem like it. None of the books (sigh, those damn books, confusing me more than helping me) think so.
So what to do?? I'm not really sure. Anyone out there know?
But hey, I'll trade naps for night time sleep ANY DAY. So if this is the new normal, fine by me. I'm just wondering...

Is she acting cranky and tired? If not, she's probably fine. Babies are very smart about what they need ... smarter even than books! :)
ReplyDeleteShe sounds just like our DD (at 12.5mo). She's been sleeping 11-12 hours a night for months, and just recently started waking up once a few times a week. She's never been a good napper though, gets maybe 35-40min twice a day. She seems happy, isn't cranky at night, and continues to go to sleep quickly and sleep well most nights. We figure night sleep is more important, so we're just going with it. Occasionally she has a 1.5 hour nap, but that's a real rarity around here.
ReplyDeleteI think you're probably just at a new normal.
I have no idea about daytime stuff but hooray for solid nighttime sleep!
ReplyDeleteI have been reading a lot of mommy blogs about sleep habits. Every baby is different, of course. Some of the other bloggers have babies that only nap for 40 minutes but then aren't sleeping great at night. Others have babies that nap for 2 hours twice a day and then sleep 4 to 6 hour stretches at night. I think as long as she's not cranky (like the pp stated) then she's probably getting enough sleep. If she seems to be suffering then it might be something to work on. If it were me, I'd go with it for now...and enjoy those nice long nighttime sleeps.
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't wait for 8-11 hour night sleeps! So far, we're doing pretty good, though. She's only a month old, but Davie's up to 4-5 hour stretches at night, and when she does wake up, all it takes is a diaper change and a quick feed and she's back down. But in exchange for the longer nights, her daytime naps are less frequent and much shorter! I was sleeping whenever she did, but now that she sleeps so much less during the day I've been trying to fit in laundry and housekeeping when I can! No luck with adding cooking back in yet. :) I'm glad you and the Critter are doing so great! How are you feeling? Do you feel like you have all your strength back?
