Fashion hell

I'm growing out of my clothes. It is weird, since I usually grow out of the butt/hips/thighs area of clothes, if (when?) I gain weight. I am a pear-shaped lady. In fact, I was told when I was younger that pear-shaped ladies are built for baby-making. Ha! So much for that theory.

Anyway, I digress. So my clothes aren't fitting so well, but now they don't fit in the waist. So strange. Don't forget, I am in various stages of denial that I am actually pregnant, so I am still fairly mystified by odd changes in my body. I still think this is just weight gain, fat gain. It is sort of delusional, yes, I know. But protective too.

So I went out to get something I could wear out of the house, now that I'm allowed out of the house and need to wear things other than sweatpants. I tried wearing my capris from last summer with an elastic hair tie holding the unbuttoned pants together, but the zipper kept unzipping, and the pants would then slide down or gape. Not so good.

I decided to check out Kohls and Old Navy for maternity bottoms (so I'm not fully delusional, I see the need for maternity. A good sign). Boy, was that a waste of time. Each store has only one rack of maternity. One rack, with mostly shirts and tops, and then shorts. WTF? What about capris? Skirts? I don't wear shorts normally - it is not a good look on my pear-shape. Are there lots of pregnant ladies walking around in shorts? Woof. Not me.

Tar-get was better, they had like 4 racks of choices. I got a pair of gaucho pants (which yes, is like sweatpants, but at least they are shorter and of lighter fabric) and a belly band. I am hopeful this belly band will be the answer to get me through the summer. But it is sort of uncomfortable, binding. Does anyone have tips on using these things?

I also have to mention that I felt like a total fraud shopping in the maternity section (or rack, as the lame store may be). I felt so self-conscious, like the Pregnancy Police were going to run up to me and tell me I had no reason to be there and escort me out. How crazy is that? Sigh, IF scars run deep.

  2. When I daydream about possibly being pregnant next year, I think I will feel the exact same way that you are feeling now. It must be surreal! Maybe online stores will have better selections! Isn't there some store called Pea in a Pod or something like that?

  4. I totally get what you are saying, but I think once you realize how comfortable maternity clothes are, you may just go crazy for comfort!

  5. I wish I could say I feel your pain but because I hardly ate anything for six weeks, I lost a bunch of cushion in my behind and some of my pants are hanging on me. Very annoying, in a different way. I have a bella band that I've used with jeans because the waistline has been tight. I think Target has a larger selection of items online. I checked it out several weeks ago and I think they have reviews of everything. There are some highly-rated black pants I was thinking about for work. I think a lot of the maternity specialty stores are crazy expensive. I went to a consignment shop last weekend and got a couple of cute tops that will come in handy when the time comes. I am mostly a fan of stretchy dresses right because then I don't have to worry about my pants being too tight or too big. Okay, jusst reread what I wrote. Can we say rambling? Good luck with your search!

  6. I highly recommend the belly belt. Search for it on amazon.com. It got me through quite a few weeks by extended the waist on my regular jeans.

  7. I totally feel your pain! At 16 wks, I'm not ready for maternity bottoms - tops are easy. It's the pants, capris, and skirts w/a zipper that are the trouble. Maternity bottoms are too big. But I got the Be Band (Targets version of the belly band) and I love it! It allows me to wear my regular jeans and capris, without buttoning or zipping them. I just fold in the edges where it would normally zip and the band keeps the pants up. Maybe you got a size too small if it feels too binding. I actually really like the way the band holds my stomach in because then my belly looks more "pregnant" and I feel like less of an imposter. I'm the same way that you are in the stores - I'm totally looking over my shoulder waiting for someone to laugh at me for thinking I deserve to be in the maternity section. But at the same time, since this is all new, I don't feel comfortable shopping online because I don't know how maternity bottoms fit really. It's so annoying! Sun dresses are the way to go, but I'm more of a jeans/capris kind of girl. Good luck!
