Heat drama

I said to Mr. P about a month ago that we needed to replace our furnace and a/c system. This is not new news, we were told we probably needed to replace them 6 years ago when we bought the place. But we've been putting it off, because, really, who wants to spend $5000 on that? Versus a vacation, or IVF and genetic testing?

So on hold it stayed.

But in what I can only interpret as the beginning phases of nesting, I began to feel we needed to do it soon. I had visions of myself in January, either 9+months pregnant or with a 2-week old newborn, and the heat goes out. Not a good thing in the Northern Midwest. Not good at all.

Mr. P agreed, and we began, slowly, to talk about getting estimates. Researching local companies, talking to other people about who they used, etc. And that is where it was.

Until Monday. When Mr. P comes home from work, and says, "It's sort of warm in here, isn't it?" I hadn't really noticed, but when we looked, yeah it was more like 74* rather than our usual 70*. Not the end of the world, but a clear sign things aren't working so well.

Long story somewhat shorter, we get a reputable company to come out to replace the whole system on Friday. Of course, the whole thing conks out altogether Wednesday night. And of course, it is predicted to be super-hot on Thursday and Friday.

Friday rolls around, and the repair guys show up 2+ hours late. Not good. Then they turn off the a/c, say they need to get some stuff from Home Depot, and leave. 5 minutes later, I pop into the kitchen and notice that water is streaming from the ceiling light fixture. From the thawing a/c unit.

Uh-oh.

No sign of the repair guys. I call Mr. P, who promptly blows a gasket, then tears a new asshole into the salesguy, his supervisor and anyone else he happens to talk to. Yikes. When the repair guys come back an hour later, they promptly deny doing anything. Of course. So Mr. P kicks them out. Of our now 83* house.

So now, in addition to no a/c on the hottest day of the year, we have water damage in our ceiling.

And did I mention, I'm pregnant and not regulating my body temp well or tolerating heat that well? I had already spent Thursday night at my brother's house, in his sweet, lovely a/c'd basement. So I packed up myself again, grabbed the cat, and hightailed it back to my brother's house. Where I am now. Thankfully, my brother & his family are away on vacation this week, so we can stay here without totally inconveniencing them.

Mr. P called a trusted contractor we have used several times before, and he took pity on us. So Mr. P is over at our house now with the fabulously nice contractor (on a Saturday!), trying to assess the damage, and figure out what to do next. Who knows how long we will be out of our house. Several days, at least.

The drama doesn't end. It just changes. Ah! The joys of home ownership!

I can't believe the first work guys denied any wrong doing!! So infuriating that you have to pay for their stupidity.
I hope you get it sorted soon x

  3. We are in the same boat! Our upstairs AC unit is toast and needs to be replaced. Nice in 105 degree weather! We got 2 quotes, $7000 and $9000!! No thanks! We'll be looking at other companies. Thankfully our downstairs unit is fine, so we're holding out until we get a reasonable quote. Anyway, not that you wanted to know all that, just saying I get it!

  4. Oh no! I am so very sorry! I hope things are fixed soon!

We are still waiting on our roof repairs from the storm in JUNE! But I can't even imagine having no a/c!

  6. Oh my goodness! I can't imagine dealing with that in the middle of summer while pregnant! What a couple of idiots for turning off the a/c and leaving. Hope the contractor is able to get the cool air up and running soon!

  7. My husband is a service manager at an HVAC-R company. I have a couple thoughts on this post:

1.) HVAC guys are at a premium during the hottest months of the year. Beyond EVERYONE wanting service NOW for surprise breakdowns, there are also the people who could have, should have addressed known problems done months (or years ago), but they put it off until the issue became critical. So, there are service and install jobs a'pleanty and everyone is swamped. Plus it's a seasonal business (there are more a/c and refrigeration calls in summer than there are heating calls in winter) and there just isn't enough labor to go around. Also, estimating the amount of time it will take to service something is not a perfect science - so if your technician(s) were on a job before they came to your place, maybe it took them longer than expected to fix that unit, which delayed them getting to your house. Or maybe if you were their first call of the day, they got an emergency call last night at 1 am for a walk-in freezer that had to be fixed so that a restaurant or grocery store didn't loose thousands of dollars worth of product and so ended up sleeping in an extra hour or three this morning to get caught up? These are both very realistic options and 2 hours late is really not any big deal at all.

2.) If you had water damage from them turning the unit off, it sounds like your condenser was frozen up and possibly your drain pan was plugged. The condenser had to thaw at some point and there is no way for them to be omniscient that the pan was plugged until it just didn't drain.

As I sit here 30 weeks pregnant, sweating, I totally empathize with your frustration with the heat. However, I am not sure you gave your HVAC guys a fair shake. Maybe they really did suck ('cause a run to home depot immediately after arriving is a little weird - they should have basic stock on their truck) but it is also possible that your expectations may be a little unrealistic.

Just my $0.02. Hope I don't offend you.
